40+ Tips to improve website Conversion, Sales and Generate Leads

It very important to know how we can improve conversion on website and specially when starting a new project. Non of the website is useless which we are creating. We always want to get some benefit from our website. And only generating traffic on our website will not help us in generating leads or business.
We have to design and develop website in a specific way so we can get the maximum benefit from which we are doing.

Here by doing A/B testing and researching on many website while working as a Art Director, Designer, SEO analyst and PHP Developer I learnt many things and with my experience I am sharing this precious information with all of You.

I may be not very good in writing. But I just want to share the information point wise. I want to make it as easy as I can.
1/ If you are planning a new website then first step me to check some popular websites of the same category and you will definitely get an idea for the content placement and functionality. These website must did some research that is why those websites are popular. So take some ideas from these site but DO NOT COPY
J

2/ It’s a good thing that you have many interesting features for your users But do not clutter everything on the home page seriously. Pick the most important and easiest to understand feature and concentrate on that only.
If you have an Offer or discount then mention that here.

3/ Always take care of the users with the slow internet connection. No body want to wait for a long. So Simply Speed up your website to make people stay on your website.

4/ On Home page if you have a introductory video and many bullet point text then please please remove those things and try some Image Slide show to make it easy to understand for users.

5/ Everybody want to make website very attractive but do not overload it with many attraction points. Because it will distract users from your CTA (Call to Action). So, try to make website in 1-2 colors with the same shade and make your CTA buttons or forms in some contrast with the website color scheme. Give your eye only one thing to foucs.

6/ Make your form stand out and for this you can use strong shapes like bound it with box of lil different color to separate it from the rest of the page.

7/ Put your forms in the left side of the page for better conversion.

8/ If Possible then make your home page as short as possible. Give your users only few options so they can choose easily and your conversion will improve with least traffic.

9/ Some designers only make icons buttons but according to research I found that button with a descriptive text are more user fiendly and get more clicks than only icon buttons.

10/ If you have a long description for a button for example “SignUp now, Its Free” but  it will not look good in design then Simply use the word “SignUp Now” in button and “Its Free” right below the button.

11/ If you have shopping website or if you simply have a form where you want customer information or their credit card information then always give some “Trust Seal” or “Guarantee Seal” “Privacy confirmed Seal” with customer support  information like email id and Phone no.
It will generate trust in users and they submit the form easily. One of its good and simple example is http://www.saleandtolet.com/tolet-or-sale-property.php#saleproperty

12/ To Generate Trust in users you can use the Testimonials in your website with real looking user images. Or real business image, or social chatting.

13/ Make your Text CATCHY. First two words of any line are most scanable so start your sentence with effective words.
Other things you can do is make important word CAPITALIZE or bold or change the color or underline to get focus on that.

14/ Website typography should be good. Use some good fonts like “Gotham” and font size for paragraph approsimate 14px-15px and line height 19px approximate. Because this is most easy to read. Do not make the paragraph big, break them after each 5-7 lines.
You can also use the text in column view for easy scanning.

15/ By using these magical words you can improve the conversion “You, Free, Because, Instantly, New, Get

16/ Never use the word “Submit” on any form button. Instead you can use “Get your Free access by joining this…” or “Get your free copy” etc.  Another example, if you have the link or button “Request a Quote” then you can write it as “Request Pricing”. This is simple and easy to understand.

17/ These buttons and links are used to redirect user on submission form to to get information from user which are already on a Form.  But here is more scope to make improvements in the form by simply deleting the fields which you do not want. Make the Form as small as possible. Ask for only those information which you really need. For example if you want a user to signup then just ask for email id, name and password. And rest of the information you can get after he signed in.

18/ You can do one more thing to make the form small by hiding the unimportant fields in advance option. Like in this form http://www.saleandtolet.com/tolet-or-sale-property.php#saleproperty

19/ Try to reduce friction as much as possible. So if you have the dropdown for example cities or countries then you can simply put the popular city and countries in top of the list.

20/ In another technique in country, State, City dropdowns you can use the Ip or geolocation technique. With this these dropdowns will fill automatically with user’s current location according to his IP. Check this for example but it supports only indian state and city for now http://www.saleandtolet.com/requirements-to-search-property-or-tolet.php#buyproperty

21/ Make the searching as easy as possible for your customers. To do this you can use any script so when user type something in search box he will get some suggestions like google. And you can do one more thing, When user type something then result will load automaticall same as google instant results.

22/ if you have the form with multiple steps then get all those fields on single page. And slightly change the background color to differentiate.

23/ If you want to sale something then always try to give some easy comparision to users. So user an easily find the best thing and can purcahse.

24/ Another thing you can use to improve sales are urgency (limited time) and scarcity (limited supply). In these give the user a “limited time” offer or “stock limited” alert.

25/ Always make your CTA button Big, Near mouse cursor position and with visible contrast color. And links like cancel and unsubscribe away from cursor reach and these should not be very highlighted. For example in newsletter if you have to give the unsubscribe link then write it like this “Click here to unsubscribe” so user will only catch the word click here not the unsubscribe.

26/ Your main concentration is that visitors should click your CTA buttons so to do this take benefit of Human emotions and use an interactive human who is looking towards your CTA button (I prefer female pictures). Most of the people will surely follow gaze of the person in picture and will click on your CTA button.
Avoide using stock images.

27/ Make your webiste according to audience. Take a survey and decide which is your audience and what they like and what language they use. Good example of this is http://www.saleandtolet.com  here they used the hindi language in tooltip and in placeholders also.

28/ Avoid using popups.

29/ Coders beautify websites with hover effects but understand that it is for mouse cursors not for fingers. Users can not mouse over using fingers.

30/ You can use the facebook like box with fans pictures on home page to generaet trust. And I suggest to use floating share widget in the left side of the window.

31/ Avoid Horizontal design. Because in these scheme most of the users will not scroll down because they do not see any continueous  content and if you use the vertical style design then most of the users will scroll to completely check the uncomplete information. And that is why there is more chances of clicks.

32/ Always try to collect users email. Because in later stage you can take benefit of these emails during email marketing.

33/ Every website have its own priorities and taste. So do not depend on on these tips. Install analytics code in your website and experient regulary with your website. I prefer to do experiment each month with my sites. It is compulsary because sales depends on the season and many more factors. So make habits to do experiments and take full advantage of google Analytics. If you do not have much knowledge about this then Hire a google analytics expert

34/ To get focus of more visitors use this cheap trick :P of animated favicon.

35/ People are habitual of internet websites and they have an idea that where a website will have a advertisement. So surprise them and put your ads in a place where they can not guess.

36/ To get foucs of users on your CTA button you can use arrows, or you can lil rotate the button or you can use special shapes or triangles to get foucs. When you use arrow then user will follow the arrow and thenchances increase of getting click on CTA button. I am impressed with this line somewhere in other article “Call attention to your most important page elements by using strangely placed and angled arrows. Tie a sequence of arrows together to define a path for the visitor to follow, ending at your CTA.”

37/  Use the right social media on your page. For example twitter is not very much popular in local indian market so if you use twitter, digg, reddit etc as a sharing button the you surely loose control on facebook and this will affect your promotion surely.

38/ In my personal opinion consider one purpose for one page or screen. Give your 100% to one  section or functionality for wach page. Because in this way if any customer will reach at this page then he will defenitely click on CTA.

39/ Do you know that colors can also help in improving your CTA? Yes you can use them for this purpose because every color have its own meaning  and demand.
Red – danger, stop, negative, excitement, hot
Dark Blue – stable, calming, trustworthy, mature
Light Blue – youthful, masculine, cool
Green – growth, positive, organic, go, comforting
White – pure, clean, honest
Black – serious, heavy, death
Grey – integrity, natural, cool, mature
Brown – wholesom, organic, mature
Yellow – emotional, positive, caution
Gold – conservative, stable, elegant
Orange – emotional, positive, organic
Purple – youthful , contaporary, organic
Pink – youthful, feminine, warm
pastel – youthful, soft, feminine, sensitve
Metallics – elegant, lasting, wealthy

40/ If you have a long page for example a website hosting website with the plan and pricing on the same page. Then you want a link some where in the top then do not only give the link, use some descriptive text for those buttons and links. For example you can write “See plan below” so user will know that he will not going on any other page and that is why he can click this button.

41/ If you have the long headlines then you should not write that headline in a single line and same size font.  You should divide that into 2 lines one big and other line in small font.

42/ Always make your website mobile friendly and easy for fat fingers. Give some more space between links to easily get clicks from people with fat fingers. And Remove all unimportant and un neccessory items from mobile site.

Web page speed up tips to get +95/100 score in google page speed insights, pingdom and on real browser

Usually on internet when you search for the speed up tips or tricks for many fast loading of any webpage or website then you will find only few tips and they never explain what should we exactly do to achieve that. I mean they never tell you clearly that what code to write and what changes to do and where to get more speed.

Here I am sharing some of the tips to speed up your website

You can contact me on Skype “rashtra”, Gmail rashtra.vijay@gmail.com and can hire me on Odesk also https://www.odesk.com/users/~01c5ebb988a5475de1

Page Speed up tips that should apply on Images

Use proper image types :- For big banners and more colourful  pictures always use jpg image types.
For transparent images use png image format.
For small, animated, less coloured, without any transparent portion use gif image formats.

Specify image dimensions :- always mention height and widths for each image in html (web pages)

Do not scale image size :- use only original height and width of any image, do not stretch images.

Use different images for thumbnails :- Sometime people use the same big image in thumbnails by scaling the size. But this will make your webpage load very very slow. So, for dynamic websites use some php scripts to make thumbnail images separately. Using that script when you upload any image then it will resize and crop that image automatically according to thumbnail size and store in different folder. And for your thumbnails that image will load, which takes very less time in loading.

Parallel downloads across hostnames :- Pingdom website shows this error during web page speed test. So to avoide this, make a sub domain and put all your images in that subdomain. And in your web page give path of that sub-domain for each image. You can apply this tricks for any other file also. But we should use it for few that is why i use this trick only for images. In this way all image loads side by side and this speedup loading of our website.

Optimize images :- Put all your images in this tool https://kraken.io/web-interface this will reduce the size of all images and you can download those as zip file. Reducing size of image save lots of kbs and improve speeds at high level because images takes most of time in loading.
EWWW Image Optimizer :- Use this wordpress plugin because this automatically reduce size of every image with your post. This is applicable on media images only. You can manually reduce the size of image by clicking “Bulk optimize” under Media.
First use “Start optimizing” button and after optimizing all images. Use “Scan and Optimize” button for rest of the images.

Make Favicon small and cacheable

SVG for vector shapes :- Avoid using images for vector shapes and make them in SVG and use in your html. This will save http request and time.

Page Speed up tips that should apply on CSS

Put CSS in <head> tag :- Always use css files in top under the head tag before any other js files. In this way your page loads easily and correct design format.

Choose <link> over @import :- Connect CSS stylesheets by using <link> tag only and do not use @import anywhere, not in CSS stylesheets also.

Remove duplicate CSS files :- Normally in WORDPRESS we add style.css using <link rel="stylesheet" href="some url here /style.css" type="text/css" media="all"/>
But is we check the source code than there you will find one more same stylesheet in this way <link rel='stylesheet' id='sitename-style-css'  href= some url here /style.css?ver=3.9.1' type='text/css' media='all' />
because wordpress automatically use the style.css file under theme folder. So take care of these things and also remove any other duplicate CSS files

Remove unwanted properties :- Some times we use some readymade CSS stylesheets for animation, sliders etc. And in those stylesheets there are many classes for different effects which we are not using. So we need to remove those unused css properties and classes. But doing it manually takes times and chances of error are more. So use the “Dust me selectot” Mozilla firefox plugin. By clicking this tool it will show you the all attached css stylesheet and unused classes in those stylesheets. There is a option “Clean” by clicking this you can save the cleaned stylesheet.
Important :- do not apply this for your main style.css because this tool on work for one page styles and classes, and your style.css have the classes of all other pages. So in this case this will remove the classes  of those other pages. That is why save only other css stylesheets by cleaning from this tool.

Combine external CSS :- After doing this cut and paste of all css codes in only one css file. This will save your http request and improves in speed.

No inline CSS :- Cut all inline css properties from html pages and make a class name in your external stylesheet and use that class for those html tag from where you cut inline css codes.

 Avoid CSS expression:- Example #myDiv {  border:  10px solid Red;
width:   expression(constExpression(ieBox ? "100px" : "80px"));
}

CSS sprites :- CSS sprites are the thing to show background images for different sections or div from one big image. Means we collect all small icons and images to make one image and give url of that image for almost all background image properties and just change in position to get that image. In this way we can save many http requests.

Avoid bad request: - Do not give url of any such image that is not present on server. Same thing apply for html reference urls in src and href.

Minify CSS :- This means remove all unnecessary semicolon, px, line breaks, white space etc etc from our stylesheet to minimize its size and no. of lines of code.
Do not do this process manually because it is time consuming. Use this online free tool devilo.us you have to copy and paste your css code in it and use “highest” option in dropdown.
Important, take care of your css gradients and @font code. Because it not property optimize these codes, so do not put these codes in this tool and just compress all other CSS styles by simply copy and pasting.

Use Shorthand properties :- If you are a good CSS coder than use shorthand CSS coding techniques and use common classes for matching styles.

Optimize the order of style :- If you can not make one stylesheet by combining all due to some reasons then in this case place those stylesheet in a specific order so that the main stylesheet loads first.

Page Speed up tips that should apply on JS

Put JS in bottom:- Always use JS files at bottom of the page because our main concern is to load the page first and then the effects. By putting JS in the bottom out website loads for visitors first and they can start interacting and during this time JS files can starts loading in background we will not lose our customers.
But always use some important jquery or JS files in header only (jquery.min.js or jquery-1.10.1.js) and also html.js but you can use html5.js by applying conditional tag only for ie.

Remove duplicate JS :- Sometimes accidentally we use two js for the same work. This happens specially in the case of jquery. Users use jquery-latest and same file by using some version like jquery.min.js or jquery-1.10.1.js but all these files works in the same way. So try removing these files and check functionality first.

Do not use external JS :- In my personal opinion we should download all external javascript and jquery files from other sites and put them on our server only. In this way those files loads much faster.

Conditional coding for JS :- Sometimes we use different JS for different pages but put them together in header file and due to this all those JS loads on each page and slow down the process. So make a code to put conditions so that only required JS files will load for particular pages. If you do not know how to do this then you should contact or hire a php developer with good skills.

Minify JS :- Try to use only “min” version of JS files but if you used the uncompressed version of js files due to some reasons then you can compress them from free online tool like jscompress.com after completing your website coding work.

Combine external Javascript files :- Combine all external JS files but do not combine those with any important jquery files. I recommend to combine only those files which are for small task or functionality and do this process manually without using any plugin or online tools. This process should be done by any professional javascriptcoder.

Inline JS :- We know that we should not use inline css codes but we can use the inline javascript codes. If you are using small few lines codes for any particular page then in this case do not make one more external javascript file and put that code in the end on html file.

Defer loading JS :- Means loads JS only after loading the html and CSS. Use Ajax for Defer loading content when possible. Ajax allow us to load only some part of the page without loading the whole page again. Make Ajax caheable. Use GET for ajax.

Optimize the order of JS :- We did this thing fo CSS stylesheets and can follow the same process for javascript files and put the important javascript file before any other less important js files.

Prefer asynchronous resources: - When a browser parses a traditional script tag, it must wait for the script to download, parse, and execute before rendering any HTML that comes after it. With an asynchronous script, however, the browser can continue parsing and rendering HTML that comes after the async script, without waiting for that script to complete.
<script>
var node = document.createElement('script');
node.type = 'text/javascript';
node.async = true;
node.src = 'example.js';
// Now insert the node into the DOM, perhaps using insertBefore()
</script>

Page Speed up tips that should apply on html

Meta Tags :- <link rel=”prerender” href=”site-name-here.com” />
<link rel=”dns-prefetch” href=”site-name-here.com” />

Specify a character set early :- <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8">

Avoid or minimize redirects:-  Do not redirect webpages specially home page. Because this will increase the server work and also increase the load time.

Remove white space and minify :- Web page automatically have lots of white spaces and line breaks in the codes which increase no. of line of codes. To remove all those line breaks securely open all your web pages in dreamweaver and press ctrl+f and put this code “[\r\n]{2,}” in find section and “\n” in replace sections without quotes. And tick the “use regular expression” option. Also select “Open documents” options from the dropdown if you want to remove line breaks from all pages. Simply press the “Replace All” button and see all html files are minify securely.
But before saving all files please check again. And if you see any yellow alert in top of the page then do not save that file. Because this can cause error in js codes. It is better to hire some experienced coder for this task.

Prioritize visible content:- Like CSS and JS also put important content on top in HTML.

Change https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6/jquery.min.js
to
//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.0/jquery.min.js

The opening // instead of https:// is a shorthand -- supported by all major browsers -- which means "the same protocol as the parent page is using". In other words, if your own site uses SSL, then jQuery will be served over SSL. If not, then your users will use plain HTTP for jQuery, and benefit from the faster connection setup un-encrypted HTTP has.

Less nested codes :-Write less nested codes in html and avoid making websites in table

Page Speed up tips using .htaccess

Leverage Browser caching :- use both mod_expires.c  and mod_headers.c
Example :-
## EXPIRES CACHING ##
<IfModule mod_expires.c>
ExpiresActive On
ExpiresByType image/jpg "access 1 year"

W3 Total cache :-  Use this tool for wordpress websites. But before using you should know how to use this. Because after installing you have to configure this and if you do not know then please don’t install. Or take help from a wordpress developer who knows all about the htaccess and website speed things.

Other tips to speed up loading of a web page

Remove query string from static resources :-  You can't cache a link with a "?" in its URL even if a Cache-control: public header is present. The question mark acts the same as  Ctrl+F5.

Reduce Cookie size :- It's important to keep the size of cookies as low as possible to minimize the impact on the user's response time.

Use cookie free domains :- When the browser requests a static image and sends cookies with the request, the server ignores the cookies. These cookies are unnecessary network traffic. In this case make a sub domain and put all the static images and other files on that sub domain.

CDN :- Use Content Delivery Network for fast delivery of files.

Avoid Using Google Maps and Facebook Like buttons :- Because these API use many external files and some type of codes that will not cacheable and also create many other problems. For better detail please check any page with and without google map in any page speed testing tool.

Avoid using Iframe, Flash and Videos

PHP flush :- Use the <?php flush(); ?>     Use it  right after the HEAD tag. When users request a page, it can take anywhere from 200 to 500ms for the backend server to stitch together the HTML page. During this time, the browser is idle as it waits for the data to arrive

SQL queries :- Avoid doing SQL queries within a loop. Instead of using a loop, you can combine the data into a single database query.

PHP Speedy :- Use PHP Speedy script to speed up the page download time here is the path http://aciddrop.com/php-speedy/

Avoid empty src and href :- Also do not use give reference of any such file that is not present on the sever or deleted. Because it will show the “Bad request” problem in page speed testing tools.

Few Fonts :- Use only few light weight fonts of the same family. Because fonts also takes times to load.

Google algorithms and search techniques

Google Caffeine
It is a new google search indexing system. When you search web you are not searching the live web, actually you are searching in the google index. In Google Caffeine it provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than last index, and it's the largest collection of web content offered.
To refresh a layer of the old index, google would analyze the entire web, which meant there was a significant delay between when robots found a page and made it available to you. With Caffeine, we analyze the web in small portions like if any new page found or new information on existing page then google update it directly to its search index on a continuous basis, globally. That means you can find fresher information than ever before—no matter when or where it was published.

Some facts about google caffeine :-
1/ New Google relies more on keywords.
2/ Search is moving into real-time.
3/ Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel. If this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second.
4/ Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day.
5/ If these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles.

Four test for google caffeine
1/ More faster speed

2/ More accurate results

3/ Temporal relevancy
4/ Bigger index size

Google Farmer algorithm
Google farmer algorithm change that affected as much as 11,8% of all US searches on Google. Google actually makes about 500 changes to its search-results ranking algorithm.

When I say content scrapers, I actually mean websites that publish content already produced by other sources. It’s main target is to punish content farms and sites with no unique and low quality content. (Content farms = sites that scrapes the web and “copy” other sites content and publishes it as its own). Google engineers has named this update Panda.

sites that loses Google rankings are sites with RSS-generated content. Those are sites that just takes the RSS-feed from other sites and publishes a part of each article on their site.

MFA sites are often sites with low quality content that also will see a drop in rankings. (MFA = made for adsense, made for ads, made for affiliate, sites that are made ONLY for sending people further to other pages and earn commissions).

Article submission tips :-
1. Make sure to properly check the guidelines of various article directories - some directories will strip out HTML and some don't. Make sure you take proper care of that in order to obtain maximum links with good anchor texts

2. You Should Submit in Appropriate Categories.

3. Don't use the same article(s) that you submit to article directories ON your website as that may trigger duplicate filters of search engines. If you want to, atleast tweak your article a bit.

4. You Should Do Manual Articles Submission.

5. Don't make too many links to your website in your article - as the chances of your article being approved decreases. As a rule of thumb, get one link in 'Article Body' and two links in 'Author Bio' - this works well for most of the article directories.

6. Avoid using double quotation marks. Instead, opt for single quotes ['].

7. Find as many article directories as possible that are related to the content on your own site. Google this:
"your keyword here" submit article.

8. Don't publish your email address while submitting to article directories - as you know what that means? SPAM!!! - or you may make a separate email account for this purpose.

9. Submit your article after 35% changes if copied from somewhere.

10. If you want your article to be picked up by some of the larger places, then you are better off submitting it by hand under your own name and account (rather using any automated service/software).

11. Make sure to submit your article in only RELEVANT article directories and it should be submitted in the correct category.

12. Consistency is the key. It is a fact that as more and more articles are added to the article directories, your article will go lower in the listings, but if you constantly and consistently submit new articles, then you will continue to reap the benefits.
